How to Prepare for Goethe A2: A Balanced 5-Week Plan

A five-week preparation plan that protects both A2 minimum scores while improving reading, listening, writing and speaking together.

A2 preparation must stay balanced because the official pass rule requires both a written minimum and an oral minimum. Begin with one timed model test and separate mistakes into comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, task completion and timing.

The five-week structure

  • Week 1: Learn every task type and establish your written and oral baseline.
  • Week 2: Train reading and listening for contrast words, time changes and negative details.
  • Week 3: Write one SMS or email daily and correct it against the task points.
  • Week 4: Record speaking Parts 1 and 2, then practise planning with a partner.
  • Week 5: Complete two full timed tests and review only the mistakes that repeat.

Track two readiness scores

Track the written portion out of 75 and speaking out of 25. Aim above the official minimums, not exactly at them. A practical safety target is consistent performance in timed practice, with no unfinished task and no missing content point.

Practise realistic ambiguity

A2 difficulty often comes from changed plans and contrasting details: not Tuesday but Thursday, cheaper after 9 a.m., the bus stops nearby but not at the station. Train the final meaning of the sentence instead of reacting to the first familiar word.

Finish with the official Goethe model test and answer sheet. Familiarity with the layout removes avoidable stress and leaves more attention for German.
