Goethe B1 vs B2: Which Exam Should You Take?

B1 and B2 sit one level apart on the CEFR scale. Here's what each proves, who needs which, and how to decide.

B1 and B2 are neighbours on the Common European Framework (CEFR). B1 is the 'independent user' threshold; B2 is the confident, upper-intermediate level above it. Picking the right one saves you months of preparation in the wrong direction.

What each level proves

  • B1: you can handle everyday situations, work, school, travel, and talk about familiar topics in simple, connected language.
  • B2: you can follow complex texts and abstract discussion, and interact fluently and spontaneously with native speakers.

Which one do you need?

B1 is commonly requested in German residence and naturalisation procedures, while universities and regulated professions may require B2 or higher. Requirements vary by legal route and institution, so confirm the exact certificate, level and issue-date rules before booking.

How to decide

  • Start from the requirement, not the level: find out exactly what the authority, university or employer accepts.
  • If B1 covers your goal, take B1; it is faster to reach than B2.
  • If you need B2 eventually, you can still take B1 first as a confidence checkpoint, then continue.
  • Take a timed practice test at each level; your scores will tell you where you really stand.

A timed model test gives the clearest answer. If you consistently score above the B1 pass mark in every module, B1 is the practical next exam. If B1 tasks feel comfortable and your goal requires B2, continue building toward B2.
