Goethe A1 vs A2: Format, Difficulty and Which Exam to Choose
A direct comparison of A1 and A2 exam timing, writing, speaking and pass rules, plus a practical way to decide which level fits you.
A1 shows that you can manage very basic everyday exchanges. A2 expects you to connect more information, describe familiar situations and interact with greater independence. The jump is not mainly about rare vocabulary. It is about longer input, more detail and more complete responses.
Side-by-side exam comparison
| Feature | A1 adults | A2 adults |

Choose A1 if...
- You can exchange personal details but still need strong support in longer conversations.
- You can write a very short message but not yet a connected email.
- The authority, employer or programme you are applying to specifically asks for A1.
Choose A2 if...
- You can understand the main point and important details in familiar everyday texts.
- You can write both a personal message and a polite semi-formal email.
- You can explain a preference, give a reason and negotiate a simple plan with a partner.
Do one official model test at each level under time pressure. Choose the level whose tasks you can complete consistently, not the level whose vocabulary list merely looks familiar.
